Have you ever caught yourself reacting to something in a way that felt completely out of character? Or noticed a pattern in your life that mirrors exactly what your parent or grandparent experienced? Maybe you’ve felt an inexplicable heaviness around certain topics, relationships, or situations that you can’t quite explain.
If any of this sounds familiar, you might be experiencing the effects of ancestral energy patterns.
What are ancestral energy patterns?
Think of energy like water. It flows through families just as it flows through everything else in the universe. When your great-great-grandmother experienced trauma, fear, or loss, that energy didn’t just disappear when she died. Energy doesn’t work that way. It transforms, it moves, and yes, it can be passed down through family lines.
Ancestral energy patterns are the emotional, mental, and spiritual imprints that get handed down from generation to generation. They’re the unresolved issues, the survival strategies, the fears, and sometimes even the gifts that your ancestors experienced and never fully processed. They live in your energy field, influencing your thoughts, your behaviors, and your choices in ways you might not even realize.
I’ve worked with enough people to know that when someone says, “I don’t know why I do this,” there’s often an ancestral component at play. The anger that erupts seemingly out of nowhere. The fear of scarcity even when you have plenty. The relationship patterns that repeat across generations. These aren’t always just your issues. Sometimes, you’re carrying the weight of experiences that happened long before you were born.
How do you know if you’re carrying ancestral energy?
The signs aren’t always obvious, but once you know what to look for, they become clear. You might notice patterns that seem to run in your family. Maybe every woman in your family struggles with money, or the men all have issues with anger. Perhaps there’s a repeating pattern of relationship failures, health issues, or career struggles that seem to affect multiple generations.
Sometimes it shows up as an emotional response that’s way bigger than the situation warrants. You feel terror at something that’s only mildly concerning. You have an overwhelming sadness that doesn’t match your current life circumstances. Your body reacts before your mind can even process what’s happening.
Another telltale sign is when you work on something in therapy or through personal development, and it helps, but there’s still this deeper layer you can’t quite reach. You understand the issue intellectually, you’ve done the work, but something still feels stuck. That’s often ancestral energy holding on.
Why does this matter?
You might be wondering why you should care about energy from people who died decades or even centuries ago. Here’s the thing: until you recognize and clear these patterns, they’ll keep running your life from the background. They’ll influence your decisions, limit your possibilities, and keep you stuck in cycles that aren’t even yours to live out.
More importantly, when you clear ancestral patterns, you’re not just healing yourself. You’re healing your entire family line, both backwards to your ancestors and forwards to future generations. You become the one who breaks the cycle. The one who says, “This ends with me.”
I’ve seen people transform their entire lives once they recognize and start working with ancestral energy. Relationships improve. Money flows more easily. Health issues that seemed intractable suddenly shift. It’s not magic, although it can feel that way. It’s simply removing energy that was never yours to carry in the first place.
Where do we start?
The first step in clearing ancestral energy is recognition. You have to see it before you can change it. This week, I want you to do something simple but powerful. Take some time to sit quietly and think about the patterns in your family. What behaviors, beliefs, or struggles seem to repeat across generations?
Practical Step One: Family Pattern Recognition
Grab a piece of paper or open a note on your phone. Write down at least three patterns you’ve noticed in your family line. These could be emotional patterns, relationship patterns, money patterns, health issues, or anything else that seems to repeat. Don’t judge them or try to fix them yet. Just observe and write them down. Notice how you feel as you do this. Does your body react? Do certain memories surface? Pay attention to all of it.
This simple act of recognition is the beginning of change. When you shine light on something that’s been operating in the shadows, you start to dissolve its power over you. You begin to see that you have a choice in whether you continue these patterns or not.
In my next post, we’ll talk about what to do once you’ve identified these patterns. I’ll walk you through a practical clearing technique you can use on your own. For now, just focus on awareness. Sometimes that’s all it takes to start the healing process.
Remember, you didn’t create these patterns, but you have the power to end them. That’s not a burden. That’s actually your superpower.
