In the last post, I talked about what a medium is and what they do. This post is going to dig into some of the details.
As I’ve mentioned before, most mediums are already mediums. They can hear the dead speaking to them. When the ability awakes can vary. Often kids can talk to the dead and never lose that ability as they get older. Many people have acquired psychic abilities after traumatic events such as nearly dying and having an NDE, a near-death experience. It can happen after a life-threatening or traumatic event. They wake up from whatever it is and notice that they can see more, sense more, and hear more than before. It doesn’t take them long to figure out that what they’re picking up with their senses doesn’t originate with the world around them but from a world beyond them.
Their beliefs then dictate their actions. People do all kinds of things when they discover they have gifts they never had. Some embrace them and learn what they can. Others do their best to ignore them to the point of using drugs and alcohol to block out the messages. Some go the extreme route and either fall into a regime of religious cleansing or even regard themselves as the new Messiah. I’ve watched many documentaries about cults and upcoming cults that have made it onto the FBI’s watch list. Interesting stuff. I’ve always been fascinated with how the human mind works. Listening to cult members spout rhetoric that doesn’t make sense in the grand scheme of things makes me sad, makes me aware, and gives me much to consider
Most seem to want to know more about it. They gather as much information about what it’s like for both the practitioner and the person asking the questions. We are inherently beings of instinct. Regardless of how smart we are, when fight or flight kicks in, for most of us, higher brain function goes out the window. That doesn’t mean we can’t control it to do what is necessary. Emergency personnel do it every day. They roll into danger even while their instincts scream for them to go the other way.
We like things to make sense. We look for the logic in things. As a psychic practitioner, that process is the same. We are always learning, questioning, and deciding what feels right. Here is where logic needs to catch up. What does it feel like? I’m an advocate for never taking anything at face value. That comes from my ability to see angels, demons, and other things. Sometimes things can look like other things. I always tell my students and clients to not only hear and take note of what is said but also feel how it feels.
Some get a visceral reaction in their body. Others find that every hair on their body stands up. What you’re looking for is the overall feeling. Does it feel good or bad? This method engages your energy system and your instincts. Step away even if everything looks and sounds great on the surface, but something still feels off. Remember, our instincts are never wrong. They have kept our species alive for centuries. It can be overactive in perceiving something as a threat that may not be, but if we are unsure, taking into account what our instincts say and exercising some caution is always a good idea.
Before starting mediumship in earnest, one of the things most do, and is highly recommended as a best practice, is to learn to speak to your guides first. This provides guidance for what to do and how to do it and is a means of protecting you from spirits and entities attempting to take over the session and/or your body. It’s also best to get to know your guides well to prevent others from pretending they are them and causing you no end of trouble.
I can’t speak for other mediums because I don’t do things the way others I have met do them. My process is different. Because I could talk to the dead from when I was little and can see them, I know when I’m talking to something I don’t want to talk to. I can feel if something is good or evil. I have also had my main guide from the day I was born and will have him until I die. I know him well. I also don’t usually speak to the newly dead.
My strength is in speaking to ancestors. That could mean parents and grandparents, but when I call out to the other side to step forward to talk to the client, it’s often someone further back in the family line. Most mediums will call out for a specific person and expect that person to come. That connection is usually made/vetted through a guide. If you don’t speak to yours, there’s no way to know if the person coming through is the one you want.
Often the spirit that is called is pushed aside by another, more powerful one that wants the chance to speak. Unless you have a guide to assist you, you might be unable to tell the difference. Each person is different, with different abilities. However, it’s in your best interest to ensure every avenue is covered to retain control over the sessions and make them as safe as possible.
Again, this is one of those gifts where I recommend training. There are a lot of techniques and practices that can help you develop your abilities while protecting yourself and your clients. Rushing into it isn’t a good idea because real risks are involved. I know another practitioner who wants to be a medium to work on missing-person cases. Unfortunately, she has a severe mental imbalance.
As my expertise has to do with fending off negative energy, having an uncontrolled illness of the mind already predisposes a person to attract negative entities. To open oneself up purposely as mediums and channels do would be akin to unmitigated disaster in my book. It’s a direct path to possession. She is already in a fragile mental state, and finding missing and possibly murdered people can be difficult and traumatic. It’s hard for mentally stable people. I can only imagine what it would be like for someone like her.
She’s already had issues with negative entities, as I have cleared her and her space. I’m not saying that she can’t do it. I’m saying that she will have to be much more careful about her practices than others. If she gets too comfortable and slacks on her protection practices, she may have a complete mental breakdown and faces possible commitment to an institution. The last I heard, she still plans on doing it. If that’s her fate and destiny, I wish her all the best.
If you are inclined to talk to the other side, I encourage you to look into it. Seeing the contentment and healing that occurs with a mediumship session can make it all worth it if you’re willing to do what it takes to become a medium.
